If you’ve been following along with me on Instagram for any length of time, you’ve probably seen a shift in my content over the last couple of months, and a lot of mentions of a place called “Melrose Place”. In fact, I’ve had several people reach out and ask specifically, “What IS Melrose Place?!” So, it seemed fitting to formally introduce you all to this special, special project through a blog post.
In short – Melrose Place is an up-and-coming boutique suite experience, currently under construction in Saskatoon, SK. I personally feel extremely lucky to have been brought into this exciting project as the lead on creative design and social media. You know what they say – “timing is everything”, and that truly could not be more accurate in this case!
To provide you with a bit of back story, it really all began with my best friend Denille, and her family. I’ve been lucky to have had the same best friend since I was 18. In fact, Denille and I went to high school together, although our friendship didn’t really blossom fully until my first year of university. We have been through a lot together – we lived together in university, were in each other’s weddings, we’re both teachers, and we’ve just done a lot of life together. We’ve often dreamed of working together in some capacity (outside of the fact that we are both teachers by profession), but the right opportunity had just never come along before.
It’s also worth noting that in addition to Denille, I also have a pretty special relationship with her family. I spent a lot of time at their house in my late teens, and actually lived and worked with her parents in South Korea at an American International School for two years from 2008-2010. Needless to say, they have always been like a second family.
So – when Denille told me that her older brother had purchased an income property in Saskatoon, with the vision of creating an executive/boutique suite in the basement, not only was I intrigued, but it seemed like an amazing opportunity to work together. You see, my own exciting project – the home build we were meant to have started as a family this summer – unfortunately had to be postponed due to the high prices of building materials as a result of Covid19.
When my home-build project was postponed, I won’t lie, I was pretty devastated. So much of the content I had planned for my social media channels was focused on this exciting project, and without something creative to pour some of my energies into, I was feeling a bit at a loss.
Before I even knew about the suite, I had actually put out an “all-call” on my instagram account, hoping to partner with someone local who might be interested in working with me on something creative and design-related. I have to admit I was absolutely floored and overwhelmed by the amazing response I received! I truly couldn’t believe so many local women and businesses were interested in partnering with me for my design input, and I hope to still be able to connect on some of these projects in the future.
It was while I was reading over all of the messages in my inbox that I received a DM from Denille asking if I she had told me yet about the income property her brother had purchased. We talk almost everyday, but she actually hadn’t mentioned it yet, and as she began to explain their vision, I immediately got excited about the opportunity of working with her and her family in the space – that is, if they would have me. 😉
Like I said, timing is everything. It came together perfectly and we’ve been working together as a team, building Melrose Place – both physically and conceptually – for most of this fall season. If you follow along with @melroseplaceyxe on Instagram, you’ll see that we are committed to promoting all that our beautiful city of Saskatoon has to offer, as well as partnering strategically with local brands and companies to showcase the talent that exists right in our own community, whenever possible.
The vision behind Melrose Place (the Suite) – so named because of it’s fabulous location on Melrose Avenue – is to provide visitors to YXE with an exceptional and unique overnight experience, in a space that is wonderfully modern-industrial in design, and also provides the comforts of home that so many travellers seek. In a world where we are increasingly aware of our surroundings and safety, Melrose Place will combine the privacy and luxury of a boutique suite experience with the amenities and convenience of a curated travel experience that appeals to so many guests looking to avoid the “one-size-fits all” experience of a hotel stay.
The suite itself, furnished exclusively by our partners at Palliser Rooms & EQ3, will include a private primary bedroom with a king-size bed, an open concept living room and kitchen space, and a luxury bathroom with access from both the main living area and the bedroom. Tall ceilings and several windows, along with in-floor heat, and custom details throughout create the perfect atmosphere for an upscale vacation or executive stay experience.
We will be documenting the entire transformation of the space, as well as highlighting and promoting our project partners, on both the @melroseplaceyxe page, and my personal account @meredith_deanne, and I would encourage you to follow along! We have partnered with an amazing local contractor, OTT Construction and Transform Home and Yardworks, for the construction of the suite itself, which is currently underway.
We also have the most amazing roster of companies we have partnered with, each of which will be featured in the days and weeks to come! There’s nothing I love better than building community through collaboration, and this project is such a fun and unique opportunity to do so.
I also have to say, that the opportunity to work on this project with my best friend and her family is something I will always be grateful for, and frankly, I think it could be the start of something very special!
